Punters go Tiger hunting

Punters have launched an enormous betting plunge on Tiger Woods to win the US Masters this week despite the former world number one having not won a tournament in well over a year.

Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said Woods had been backed from $11 to $9.00 with one punter having $60,000 on him to collect over $600,000.

“Punters clearly think Woods is ready to win again and the money we have seen this week is like two years ago when punters loaded up on Woods to win every major,” Sullivan said.

“Punters are getting far better odds now too of course as he was $3.00 for the Masters two years ago and we have bet a punter $60,000 at $11 this week.

“This is the biggest price Woods has been for a tournament in over a decade and punters are happy to gamble that this will be the week he rediscovers the magic.”

Sullivan said Phil Mickelson had also been well supported as tournament favourite at $7.00 while there had been money for a number of players at longer odds as well.

“We have taken bets of $10,000 and $5000 on Mickelson and he has shortened from $8.00 to $7.00,” he said.

There has also been good money for Luke Donald, Hunter Mahan and K.J. Choi.

“Aaron Baddeley has been the best backed of the Aussies shortening from $67 to $41 following some big bets.”
