Sportsbet.com.au Pays Out More Than $100,000 in Bets On Murray
Punters who backed Andy Murray to defeat Rafael Nadal with leading online bookmaker Sportsbet.com.au will be happy with their choice. As Sportsbet.com.au pledged to pay all bets on Murray to win while refunding all bets on Nadal following his third set retirement last night.
The move – unprecedented in Australian betting – is set to cost the bookmaker more than $100,000.
“Common practice amongst bookies is to void all bets when a player retires, however, it was pretty clear Murray was going to romp home and we think it’s only fair that those who backed him get paid,” said Sportsbet.com.au’s Haydn Lane.
“Punters who backed Nadal live to fight another day, while those who backed Murray with anyone else will only have their bets refunded.”
Lane said bookmakers around the country stood to lose substantially as Murray was well backed to win the quarter final match.
“Other bookies will be thanking Nadal for saving them a fortune, but we think it’s not right to hide behind the rules and simply void all bets on this match,” Lane said.
Murray has rocketed to be the $2.50 favourite to win the Australian Open ahead of Roger Federer ($2.75), Novak Djokovic ($8), Nikolay Davydenko ($9), Marin Cilic ($15) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga ($21).
