Mick Malthouse even money to not coach next year

With speculation continuing to grow on where and indeed if Mick Malthouse will coach in 2012, Sportingbet Australia has opened a market on his job for 2012 which includes options of coaching the Demons, Bulldogs and even staying in the top job at the Pies.

Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said there had been a number of enquiries from punters wanting to bet on it as there was such a huge range of possibilities of how Malthouse will earn his pay cheque in 2012.

“We have Malthouse an even money favourite to not be a head coach in 2012 which would almost certainly involve him staying at Collingwood in his new role but there are plenty of punters who have been keen to back him to be elsewhere,” Sullivan said.

“Melbourne is at $3.50 and looks a perfect fit if he does want to coach on as they have a young list with potential and are obviously without a coach.

“With Rodney Eade out of contract and well backed to take the Crows job in 2012, the Bulldogs job is third pick at $5.00.

Sullivan said he couldn’t rule out Malthouse still coaching the Pies in 2012 especially if he led them to another flag this year.

“Coaching Collingwood in 2012 is definitely an outsider at $10 but whoever heard of moving a coach on after he won consecutive flags,” he said.

“Nathan Buckley has obviously been lined up to coach the Pies next year but stranger things have happened and we are keeping Malthouse coaching another year at Collingwood pretty safe.”
